Contrary to common belief, PNB powder is not made by dehydrating or freeze drying.
Rather, peanut butter powder is made by roasting the peanuts, pressing them, and removing the oil. The remaining protein gets ground up into a fine peanut powder.
Because it doesn’t contain much fat, peanut butter powder has a very long shelf life and is a great emergency food to have on hand.
There are a lot of brands of peanut butter powder available now. Aside from price, the main difference between them is how the PNB powders are packaged. Some brands package their products in a way that allows them to last much longer.
You also want to pay attention to whether the powdered peanut butter has additional ingredients, such as sugar.

Best for: Affordable organic PNB powder
Even though it is organic, this powdered peanut butter by PB&Me is actually cheaper per oz. than most other brands.
The plastic packaging is pretty sturdy. Note the containers are pretty small though, so it’s not the best choice if you go through a lot of peanut butter powder regularly. If you like sweeter PNB, they also make a version with sugar and one with chocolate.

PBfit Peanut Butter Powder
On a per-ounce basis, PBfit is one of the cheapest peanut butter powders you’ll find. It also has more protein than most other brands of PNB powder.
Despite being cheap, the PNB actually tastes good and there aren’t any issues with mixing it up.
Like most PNB powder in plastic containers, the shelf life is only about 2 years. Thus, it’s the best peanut butter powder for everyday use since it’s very affordable and you’ll be able to rotate through it.
The brand also makes an organic version with sugar and a sugar free version too.

Augason Farms Dehydrated Peanut Butter Powder
Best for: Emergency food that comes in a can
Augason Farms PNB powder is the only one (that I’m aware of) which comes in sealed cans. It is slightly pricier than most brands per ounce, likely due to the most expensive packaging.
They apparently dehydrate their peanut butter powder after removing the oil, which removes more moisture and allows the product to last longer.
There are also oxygen absorbers in the cans, so shelf life is up to 5 years. There is sugar and salt in the PNB and slightly less protein. However, it’s great if you prefer your emergency foods in cans.
- Ingredients: peanuts, sugar, non-iodized salt
- Packaging: Can with oxygen absorbers
- Shelf life: Up to 5 years
- Servings per container: 65
- Nutrition (per 2 Tbsp. serving):

On a per-ounce basis, Naked is one of the cheapest peanut butter powders you’ll find. Yet, they are still a high quality product.
The Naked brand sets itself apart by sourcing their peanuts exclusively from the USA. The peanuts are certified non-GMO and there is no added sugar or preservatives. I also like that the brand lists the complete nutrition of their product on the label and also test for heavy metals.

This small, convenient packaging makes Lantako great for people who don’t use PNB powder frequently or want to try it out before committing to large quantities.

How to Mix Peanut Butter Powder
The instructions for reconstituting peanut butter powder are similar across most products.
- For a low-fat peanut butter: Mix 2 Tbsp. PNB powder with 1-2 Tbsp. of water. Use more or less water to get the consistency you like.
- For creamier peanut butter: Mix 2 Tbsp. PNB powder with 1 Tbsp. of water and 1 Tbsp. of oil (preferably peanut oil).
How Long Will PNB Powder Last?
Most brands of peanut butter powder have a shelf life of approximately two years. Some brands package their PNB powder in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, thus extending shelf life to up to 25 years. Regardless of how it is packaged, it’s important that you keep PNB powder in a cool place. It will go rancid in high temperatures.
Repackage PNB Powder for Long Term Storage
If you can’t find PNB powder packaged in Mylar with oxygen absorbers, you can always do it yourself (emergency food brands are often out of stock!).
Just remove the PNB powder from its original packaging, put it into a Mylar bag, add the right amount of oxygen absorbers and seal the bag.
